Video on Demand or Flash Streaming

Following is the typical process for Video on Demand (VOD) or Flash streaming.

Content Ingestion and Encoding

Send your tapes or DVDs to our data center. If you have encoded content, it can be sent directly to the data center via secure FTP across the Internet. Movies, ads, program content, video clips, etc. are stored in the individual data centers in advance of the scheduled show. A movie that may be shown 10 times in a 6 month period or a video clip that will be downloaded 1,000,000 times per day only needs to be stored once.

Content Distribution for Video on Demand (VOD) or Flash Streaming

After the content is uploaded to TotalStream, the files are then ‘pushed’ by the synchronization servers to the download servers. There are multiple downloads servers in each data center. When content has been replicated to all of the download servers, your system will then be sent a ‘trigger’ notification that the files are ready to be added to go your ‘live’ playlist. Totalstream has a GUI showing the status of the file synchronization for each data center, and server.

Content Distribution for Scheduled Broadcasts to Large Audiences

For scheduled broadcasts to large audiences, TotalStream mirrors the content from ‘master’ VOD server to multiple streaming servers. Each streaming server is configured with a play list which can broadcast multiple channels. For example, a play list may contain a 6 p.m. program, then run commercials #1 and #2, then show a program at 7 p.m. followed by commercials #3 and #4, then play program #3, and so on.

Play lists can be scheduled by time zone (different data centers for different time zones) and live content can also be scheduled. The play lists are specified by the client in advance of the broadcast. Each streaming server will then receive all channels from the ‘master’ VOD server which in turn will stream to the viewers. Each channel can have a different encoding bit rate. This design is completely modular and can be replicated to any data center.

Need to deliver a scheduled movie broadcast to 1,000,000 viewers? Not a problem with TotalStream. Each data center operates independently; if there is an outage in one data center it doesn’t impact the others. Users are automatically connected to the closest streaming server for a quality viewing experience.

To a certain degree ads can be targeted geographically (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, etc) based on the location of the data centers. Localized and targeted advertising can help maximize your revenue stream. To a certain degree ads can be targeted geographically(Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, etc)
